Not only are they sweet and delicious, they contain a group of powerful antioxidants known as betalains, which have been found to act as an anti-inflammatory and to aid in the prevention of lung and skin cancer. In addition, beets have been known to be a detoxifying agent and cleanser, as well as having the ability to test your stomach acid (pink pee = low acid). And as the Romans (of course) discovered, beets can pep up your romantic encounters, as it contains boron, which is related to the production of human sex hormones. I'm sure they did't know that, but somehow they figured out the benefit. Beets can help with depression and mental clarity, lower blood pressure and can give you energy. Really, what more could you ask from a humble root vegetable!
